-8(-x + 3y) -2[ x + (-4y) ]?
-8 * -x + -8 * 3y - 2 *x + -2 * -4y
8x - 24y - 2x + 8y
8x - 2x -24y + 8y
6x - 16y
I believe that this is right and I hope it helps! Sorry if it isn't right, kids bothering me.

-8(-x+3y)-2[x+(-4y)]
-8*-x = 8x; -8*3y = -24y;
-2*x = -2x; -2*-4y = 8y; so:
8x-24y-2x+8y
8x-2x = 6x; -24y+8y = -16y; so:
6x-16y
now reduce to Lowest Common Factors:
2(3x-8y)
this shows how to do addition and subtraction.
the only tricky thing is, when you multiply two negative numbers, the answer is positive

First of all NOT an equation but an algebraic expression in 2 variables...
( 8x - 24y) + ( -2x + 8y) multiplying each coefficient by terms in parenthesis, ( ) added for clarity...
6x + (-16 y) collecting like x and y terms
6x -16y ........................... finis
