Wouldn't it make more sense to take a stimulant when depressed?

I'm not looking for an answer that explains alternatives to alcohol, however. I want to know the psychological aspects at work here, and other reasons why people would consume alcohol after becoming depressed beforehand.

becuase in their depressed state many people make the mistake of thinking that alcohol will make them happy! or make things all better! well i really hope that the depressed people are not taking antidepressents and drinking at the same time that could be very dangourous! besides a lot of people think the drinking solves all the problems, makes them go away, or they just plain get smashed and forget! I have seen this happen to someone and man they were very screwed up!

When you are really depressed and drinking, you don't think in this kind of logic. You think in the logic of someone who is hurting. All you want to do is make the hurting stop. Booze fools you into thinking it is doing just that. It dulls the pain. Hence, you drink it even though it is making the pain worse, not better.

At least with alcohol you are given a really decent exaggerated feeling of well being and invincibility. When you're really REALLY depressed, crawling into a bottle makes your soul feel better. You know you're abusing yourself, so on a subconsious level, it kind of makes you happy(er).

I don't like stimulants...when I'm depressed I want to just have that temporary feeling of okay-ness. I'm figure stimulants would just keep you unhappy and WIDE AWAKE. I like to sleep when I'm sad (and drunk).

People who are already depressed rarely think straight, they drink alcohol to depress themselves into a state where they don't notice the things that depress them (acheiving a twisted high)

Because they're idiots?

They want to get drunk - to get away from whatever it is that is bothering them. Unfortunately, rather than make problems go away, substance abuse magnifies existing problems and heaps new ones on top to boot.

Depression leads to escapism. Typical avoidance/escape behavior is to use substances to alter your state of consciousness so you stop worrying about your problems. In doing so you also stop any effort at solving them.
