Are we all dumbing down? Does anybody else hate this bone-idle text-speak? Is life really so short we can't be bothered to spell 'what' instead of 'wat'?

Ahahaha

I hear you, it not just this site.
Folks taking shortcuts can at time be funny.
Trying to figure out what's being communicated
is difficult and at times very humorous to me.
It does leave the opportunity for funny twists
to meanings and words.
I try to enjoy it, usually i get more than my daily
portions of laughter from it. Enjoy it, think of things to do with it that satisfy you.
We are most likely not going to change it.

Have a pleasant day.

I always spell correctly, where I can; if there's an error, it's a missed typo. I certainly don't think I'm dumbing down, but, equally, think that I'm part of a rare and dying breed. If English grammar was taught in schools, then it might improve things. The best thing I did to improve my English was to learn Latin - you have to know the grammar to understand the language, and it bears more than a strong similarity to English, not surprisingly.
Teaching "conversational" foreign languages only means that there is no rudimentary grasp of the underlying structure, i.e., the grammar, which means that there is no real comprehension of the language.

Sorry - soap box rant for the day is now over.

I think it is the dumbing down that is going on. People just don't try anymore. Spelling isn't important as getting their message across. I cringe when people use bad grammar such as they're, their, there, to, two, too etc. It is horrible. When I was a teacher I lowered grades for misspelling or incorrect grammar. I knew some teachers that didn't care because once the clock said 4 they were gone and they had to correct all the papers so just as long as the kid could write they received an A.

Nowadays, there's no
Spelling nor Phonics in
the classrooms.
Cause for that?
Too much state testing!
Emphasis is placed in Math &
Science and not enough on
the other two.
Plus, our young leaders of today are
too busy playing videos games to enjoy
learning to read ,write, and spell.
What about multiplication table(s) ?
Have you heard your child recite them
lately?
High Schoolers don't know their
time table; let alone, how to multiple
2 digit numbers without the use of a calculator!!
Sad case.................

Maybe it's because we're all kids.
We've grown up with texting, emailing etc.
I can't believe you're suprised, actually.
It's inevitable.
Sorry to say it...
lol lmao rotfl
etc etc.
Are all the rage. Unlucky.

Oh and the reason I mispellt my question was because I was in a rush. It was on a pub quiz. God this makes me sound lame.

Lack of application by pupils at school. They don't care about spelling conventions or grammatical rules or syntax. Its all part of the "rules don't affect me maaan" culture. In reality just an excuse for laziness, nothing more.

Kudos to you. I find myself skipping over questions that can't spell our most common English words correctly.

I wonder how many of these speedy teens/ young adults (heck, maybe even adults!) don't notice the blatant spell check feature right above the text area.

*sigh*

Probably because the people who can't spell properly missed a lot of school. But why don't they use spell check.

Most of the people on this site are quite young and it's more time-efficient to type phonetically... However, from the content I've seen on here, it's partly that, but mostly, they just don't seem to care...!
