I hear the term bleeding heart liberal and I am so dismayed. Is it not caring about eachother that is supposed to put us above the animals? The defanition of liberal is generous. Since when did generous become a bad thing?

Because the simplest way to discredit someone is to throw a big label on them, find one area under that label that you can attack, and impute the attack to everything else.
It's mindless and it's meaningless, and yet it has become the national pastime.

coragryph, already answered the labeling part right . SO I will continue with some things first the trem liberal has become a perjorative . it has come to mean a spinless weak person . . LBJ knew when hew signed many of the progessivelaws in the 119600s that he was damn the democrating part . in particualr the civil rigts law . Ronnie Raygun yes I spelled it deliberatly and his handelers invented the wefare queen a black woman fully capable of working who gets a all sorts of hand outs from the government . Thishas hurt the truelly disabled and elderly or the working poor
Being gennouruos is not bad it is that people are greedy by nature
At a personal level carring is usually not bad though the 12 step revoery movement hasmade it a quasi disease called "co denendancy' for which the only "treatment" isa life time of CODA meetings
vbut pole can care to much hurt them selvels and others or find them selves care ingfor soem one and the feelinhs ar not reciporcated . .
I think that both are interwinedas alot of people have been taken advantage of
society is sick of seeing full capapble in al ways not working and get how ever meager of a check . onceagain this hurts the truelly disabled

well, if you cared about men's needs, you'd give them liberal amounts of sex.
Seriously, there has to be a balance between helping the needy and coddling them. I'm all for helping them. I think the way we divvy up the funds is problematic, and I don't claim to have the answers, either. I do have some ideas of how to change things, but I'm definitely against any form of assistance which encourages them to remain lethargic.
As for the bad PR for the term "liberal," talk radio is partly to blame, but also remember that when liberals were in power, there were some interesting things being said. I distinctly rememebr a whole bunch of liberals mocking the US Constitution as a document "written by a bunch of old white guys." Today, liberals regard the Constitution as a sacred document in danger of being destroyed (and this time around , the liberals are right).

A "bleeding hear liberal" has nothing to do with being generous (from the heart). Bleeding heart liberalism has to do with a redistribution of wealth - in other words, being generous with your money. Oh yes, they get to oversee this too (power thing).

"Generosity killed the cat?" - that is the first thing I thought about, but we are much smarter than cats. I believe being generous to others is good, but if that person takes advantage of you, then you must confront them or not offer any hand outs.

It became a bad thing as soon as Bush became president. The Neocons hate to give their money away, or get what they consider less than others. They don't realize that others NEED help from those who are more fortunate.

I couldn't agree more. Everyone seems to be afraid that someone may get a little more than they will and they don't think it is fair. They are just afraid of a little competition. Or worse, that they might have to work hard to get a job they want instead of having their parent's friends hand it to them.

It's not the "caring" but the "not doing" that gets folks so riled up. Bleeding heart liberals are seen as a drag - lots of noise but little action. "All show and no" go is the way it used to be characterized.
