super mario 3 advance is great - as a bonus, i'm almost certain you can help him out on that game, everyone knows how to play!
pokemon is probably too tricky, what with levels and whatnot, and besides, there probably aren't other kids playing it near him... so dont' get that
kirby games are always great. like mario, they are side scrollers. and it's just really simple gameplay.

Super Mario Brothers 3 Advance!!!!
I love this game ( i allso have the retro consoles like snes, nes, ps1, N64 gameboy color etc etc the list goes on and on)

Go with a Classic: Tetris! It will help with coordination and understanding the relationships of shape.
Brain Age and other 'educational but fun' games are also recomended....nothing wrong with a few pure fun ones too.

My 11 year old says to get him/her Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland, Pokemon (any version), Frogger ...Zelda's are good, but they may be too tricky yet.
