huge separation of wealthy and poor, millions of uninsured, consumption of natural resources 5 times that of any other nation......is this the best america can be?

Not free society but a capitalist one.

Caplitalist societies throughout history have always resulted in what you describe with the dissolvement of the middle class. Usually a revolution occurs not much afterwards.
