Exactly! I have never seen the difference apart from the fact that one is a mental prostitution whereas the other is physical. As a writer I need to spend time doing one activity that is not diluted by the expectations of others. Still I need money so I must work which is engaging in a service that gives to others but takes away time that I need to reach my fullest potential. To get a job and to smile and build relationships with coworkers and the administration it is neither as disingenuous or innocuous as we think it is. To be part of society we must chip away at ourselves and give the pieces to those who want our services. This is prostitution. What an excellent question! Thank you for posing it!

It's called 'Quid Pro Quo'...which is Latin for 'you scratch my back, I'll scrach yours'.

We do things for others in expectation that they will help us out in return, if not immediately then at some point in the future. We expect the balance of giving to receiving to be fairly even. We might be willing to give more than we get to relatives or other close loved ones but we definately will not do much for a stranger without some expectation of return.

Your question might be asked in a different manner: "How is a crack whore any different from a brain surgeon?" They both provide a service in exchange for payment.

The answers so far leave out the idea of doing something because you want to help someone else and not for any material gain. Just this morning I stopped and helped someone with a flat tire, and I didn't expect anything for it but knowing that it could be me next time who needs help. I also like the job I have and would do it even if I had independent wealth, and I know I'm not alone.

If I was any more like a prostitute or crack whore I'd be rich.

So I would have to say a apparently rare no.

Oh dear aunt lizzie, are you ever wrong! I am no prosititute! And I can't see where you think that people are in the same league of selling themselves to someone for that persons use and the using of personality to gain the friendships and business contacts we need. If we did not do that we would be robots with only facts and figures spouting out of our mouths. Not me. No way in the world will I be compared to a hooker.

Pretty much so... we work for pay, and exchange our time for money and benefits. Some even kiss a little a s s, too. But at least we maintain SOME diginity in the knowledge that it is a necesity to support our family and loved one and to pay bills and rent/mortgage in accordance with societal mores, and we're not ingesting a chemical that we all know is harmful and addictive.

welllllllllll now.... we all have to do what it takes to get us to the life we want... but most healthy minded humans take control of their life in acquiring their goals in their hopes and dreams for their life.. I don't think a crack whore has control of deciding anything for their life as the drug has total control of them from the first.

well, do you want a crack whore operating on you? So, although we do things to earn money, we take care of ourselves and others and that's the difference.

Prostitution does not mean doing something for money or material gain - if it did, we would all indeed be prostitutes.

What it does mean is doing something for money or material gain THAT SHOULD NOT BE DONE for money or material gain.

So, no, we are not necessarily all prostitutes.
