I was watching one of the home improvement shows and here's a couple of things I learned to make a small closet "look" bigger than it is:
1) Use white plastic hangars as apposed to wooden ones, or dark colored ones. The white plastic makes the space look much more open
2) Use shoe racks that hang on the door (if that's an option, depending on what kind of closet door you have), that way everything is up off the floor and it looks less cluttered.
3) And something that I personally do: I hang all my pants together, all my shirts together, skirts etc. Even though this doesn't actually create more space, it makes it look more uniform, which in turn makes the closet appear bigger

You said look bigger, so I assume you don't plan to remodel. Are you looking to make it more spacious? Shelving helps. Shoe bags can hang on the backside of the closet door. And is it possible to store some of your closet items in plastic covered boxes under the bed? If it's just a look of space, a mirror also does a great job of giving the illusion of space.

Remove out-of-season clothing, sports equipment and other miscellaneous items from your front entry closet. Try to take out half the items in your bedroom closets to make them appear more roomy.
To increase the storage capacity of your closets, add an extra pole, shoe racks, wire baskets or shelves.
You can also make closets appear bigger by applying a fresh coat of white paint and putting in the highest-wattage bulbs allowed.

I am assuming that all you have is a rod on which to hang clothing. There are some decent closet organizers out there which give you room to hang things more efficiently, and give you shelving as well.

Try a double decker closet rod. Hang your pants on the top rod and shirts on bottom rod. You should also gleen your clothes eliminate anything that you have not used for 6 months.

you might be able to organize your stuff a bit better. move some things to other parts of the house if you don't use them very often and if there's room somewhere else.

you might be able to give away some clothes that you don't wear too.

i don't really know why you want it to look bigger. :S
but my closet could use a good cleaning, i think....

Clean it up and use the storage containers with drawers that slide open. Stack them on top of each other to create a shelf appearance.

You can try better organization of your things, and if this doesn't work, you will just have to throw out some of the things that you need the least.
