Meteors are pieces of rock that are falling down through the atmosphere, I think that's the answer you want. Before the stones strike the atmosphere, they are known as meteoroids. After they hit the ground, they are meteorites. Many people get these terms mixed up, so it's a good idea to know which is which.

Meteors, if they are "big" and meteorites if they are "small". Since a meteor would probably wipe out all life on earth, pieces of stone that have entered the Earth's atmosphere in the recent past are called meteorites.
