Well, people can be mean for any number of reasons. Sometimes people are mean because they like to impress their friends, sometimes they like the feeling of control over someone,and sometimes they are raised in a home like that.
It really depends on what the situation is.

People aren't mean for no reason, they're mean for now "apparent" reason - meaning a reason you might not know but they do. It really just depends on the situation. If you could be more specific, like if this question is because something happened to you, it would help me answer the question better. But if you ask the question in genereal I'd just say that people are mean because of a reason, but you just might not know it.

1) They are angry at the world because their life sucks and they want to make the rest of us miserable.
2) Putting down someone makes them feel superior.
3) They're jealous because you are better looking, have more money, more friends, etc. See #1.

Some people are just miserable and it upsets them to see people happy when they cant be. So in turn, they tend to make everyone around them miserable too. Then there are just some people that enjoy ruining your day.
