Rare is not unprecedented. I heard a guy talking on the radio who had gone diving with Irwin. He said Steve would never wear a wet suit. I don't know if that would have made a difference here but it might have.

stingrays are not aggressive, he must have startled it or touched it close to the barb. it is very rare for a stingray to kill someone
