Is rap the same thing as hip hop? If not, what's the difference?

good question. Hip-hop bigger than rap. Rap is what someone does when they "spit lyrics" or recite the rap. Hip -Hop is more of a cultural movement. rap falls under the umbrella of hip-hop. Hip-Hop could be a song sung (like how Lauren hill used to do), hip-hop could be the clothes you wear, a style you are into...which id far more interesting a pivotal than rap all alone.

Hip hop is the culture. Rap is a genre that's part of hip hop culture...a genre where the artist, well, "raps" instead of sings to a beat. Rap predates hip hop I think, it has it's roots in spoken word jazz vocalists from the late 60s and 70s like the Last Poets and Gil Scott Heron.

hip hop is a more broad term for the genre of black music which usually contains some elements of rap.

Eminem, Tupac, wu-tang are examples of true rap
Missy Elliott is a good example of rap AND hip-hop
