I need a topic that would be good to write 4000 words on. This topic can come from any mathematics subjects. I prefer not to write about math history or anything that relates to history. Can anyone suggest a good topic to write about that relates more to pure mathematics than history of mathematics? Also, please try to keep your suggestions on the college level or at least the high school level. Thanks.

Those are all good topics and I will think about it. I also wanna add that I've taken up to Calculus AB so anything that relates up to there is fine. Or anything that is in Calculus BC is cool too because I can learn ahead if i research something in Calculus BC :).

Whatever you do, don't write about the contribution of non-western cultures to mathematics because you will not be able to get more than one word for your essay - ZERO. Oh wait, you can probably write a lot about how the majority of Indians are inclined to lie about their mathematical accomplishments. Their motto is: A lie repeated often enough becomes true in good time.

I did a H.S. paper about the formula's for the volume of regular shaped forms (e.g. a cube, a sphere, a cylinder,...). I don't remember the name. But I was struck by the similarity of the equations. I hope this helps.

My first thought would be to delve into number theory. It's a vast field, and one that is generally more accessible to the lay reader. It's also relatively easy to express elements of number theory in written English; delving into other branches of mathematics would require more specialist notation and fewer words. It's also an area of maths still full of open hypotheses. There's more than enough to get your teeth into.
