All the responses above sound like they come from the Americans. I wonder what the Japanese thought. One guy above came the closest regarding their sense of honor. I wonder how much the utter annihilation broke their 'vengeance' reaction. Would this same event cause a similar reaction in the muslim world, or would the Muslims seek vengeance based on their sense of honor? hmmm, just wondering?

I used to live in Japan, and I've had many Japanese folks tell me they feel the Atomic bombs saved their lives. Given that the official plan was to mount a last-ditch defense and committ mass suicide if it failed, they are probably correct. School children and women were trained with bamboo staves to repel an invasion. It was planned that they would acutually be placed in the front lines, as human shields for the soldiers who would form the second line of defense.
The surrender to the USA also prevented Japan from being invaded by the USSR. It's acutally the former USSR's sudden declaration of war after Hiroshima that people of that generation tend to feel bitter about.
The "Japan was about to surrender" revisionists can't explain why Japan didn't surrender immediatly after Hiroshima, instead of a full week later. Even then the surrender was an touch and go thing-Tokyo police had to put down an attempted anti-surrender coup.

A lot of negative lying from the Media over Pearl Harbour, domestic disquiet & 4 heavens sake how can U hit back after a Nuclear Bomb.
They had their nose blooded big time, no amount of Kamikaze Pilots could avenge 4 the Suffering (& continued suffering ) that 1 bomb caused. & then 2 drop another 1, 30 or so miles away from the first!
They were a nation in shock.
Japanese live, breathe & die 4 Honour.
I think they lost their Pride that day.
Hopefully it shall never B repeated but with tons of Depleted Uranium dumped on Iraq, daily 4 months, the suffering continues.
Just without the fanfare of a Big FCUK-off BOMB.

The Japanese cultural places a great deal of importance on accepting responsibility. They saw the destruction of the atomic bombing as a result of their aggression and therefore accepted much responsibility for what happened. Since then the Japanese have been very mindful of aggressive military actions and have been an important international voice in reminding us of the horrors of nuclear war. They were willing to accept the consequences of something they started. If the US and other countries were only as accountable as the Japanese we might have a more peaceful world.

Japan was essentially destroyed after the two bombs. Before the bombs Japan was already destroyed. Majors cities suffered heavy bombing long before the atomic bombs. Japan had a lot of enemies in WWII. Japan was running on empty. It would have folly to continue a war with a giant after it slapped you around.

1. They started it by attacking Pearl Harbor in Hawaii
2. hunderds of thousands of innocent people died
3. They didn't have nuclear power and couldn't retaliate in kind
4. The bombs took out the military centers
5. They are a culture thats very honor-based. They started a fight, the US had superior firepower. They were not going to resort to terrorism, or lose more of their people by continuting to fight to the last man.
6. As an honor-based culture, they signed a peace treaty agreeing not to reaccumulate a significant military force, and would bring even more shame on themselves should they break it. Japan used to be called Nippon, they changed the name after they lost the war.

lol, those were their main military centers, they were truely crippled. What could they do but die or surrender? And keep in mind we could have had more bombs like those, and they did not.
