Thermostat maybe. I had the same problem and as soon as I got a new one, it stopped.

Please check to see if you have a cooling fan relay. It should be located under the hood with other relays. Sometimes you can interchange them to see if it is bad. Also put on the defroster or A/C to see if one or both go on. Be sure the temp is above normal. It seems like the head temp has to be around 200 to 220 degrees before ittrips the temp sensor. If it still don't go, and your sure the fan motors are good,I would look real hard at the temp sending unit, located on or close to the head.

It may be a plugged radiator. If it is not flowing enough at low speeds it can cause an over heat problem. Also I would check the fan switch like others said. To check radiator run your hand over it when its warm, unplug the fan first just in case, does it have hot and cold spots? If so you need a new radiator.

I believe there is a sensor on the rad. Try playing with the connector first and stay clear of the fan. As they can go off automatically.

OK your fans could be wired wrong they have to suck in air not push the air out check that that is very important chek your coolent and is it leaking any fluids.

in my 94 model C220 AMG, i changed my FAN SWITCH & THERMOSTAT to curb the high temperature... i suggest you look for that.
