I recently went to a club that played house music with a latin flavor and wasn't sure how to dance to it. The girls there were dancing what seemed like a combination of cuban salsa and rave moves. And the guys were doing something that looked like the robot, but not quite. Sorry, I'm not sure what that style is actually called. Also, when the dj let the music die down for a bit there was lots of clapping in the crowd.

I'd like to learn how to dance like the people at the club, but I don't have a background in dance and so I'm not sure what to pay attention to when watching other people dance. I'm not as interested in the robot type stuff as much as in the salsa/ rave style.

Thanks.

The best thing to do is to just go with the flow and look confident. I didn't say that you had to be confident, just LOOK CONFIDENT. Move your body to the lower beats like the drums. The beat that stands out the most and that seems the most steady is the beat that you want to follow. I don't know whether you are a male or female, so I'll tell you what to do for both.
If you are a girl, swing your hips back and forth. There's no need to move your arms around too much, you'll just look crazy. Always: shake your butt. Your butt will lead the way. Hips and butt. That's it. Even if you don't really have either, it doesn't matter. Just use them.
If you're a guy DON'T BOP YOUR HEAD!!! Unless you know that you have rhythm, never bop your head. You'll look foolish. In your case look at wat other guys are doing. Don't do any tricky dance moves and don't shake your butt. That's just weird. You will use more of your upper body to dance. Chest and torso. Also it's more of a forward back motion as opposed to a womens side to side motion. Hope I can help.

If you want to learn Latin dances, you can go to many community classes and take some lessons. Often, they are held by community centers, and adult education type schools.

In my area, 8 lessons usually cost about 50 to 70 dollars.

You can learn the basics of Meringue, Rumba, Cha-cha - enough to get started. Salsa and Mambo are pretty close.

Sometimes, clubs host "group lessons" in earlier hours of their operations. Those are often free.

By the way, you don't shake your BUTT. That movement comes from the fact that your knees are bent and steps are taken in alternate fashion.

Try this.... Stand straight - feet about 1/2 foot apart. UNLOCK your knees. Put weight on your left feet and move your left KNEE forward. You'll notice, your right knee will straighten, and right hip will go out to the right. Now, alternate.

In ballroom dancing (which includes Latins), it is literally called "Latin motions."

I love that style of music. I learned by just watching and doing. Don't care what people think of your dancing. Just enjoy the moment and have fun!

Generally it involves getting drunk enough that your body becomes more fluid and then you kind of throw your body into others personal space.
