YEP! It's all about the sewer gases. These gases are poisonous and EXPLOSIVE. All washing machine drains have a trap in then somewhere, in the line, or under the floor. YOU NEED IT.

Yes. All pipes that provide drainage to the sewer need to have a water seal so the sewer gas aroma will not back up through the pipe and enter the house. Very bad smell!! A washer machine drains to the same sewer as the sinks and tubs.

Yes, whenever you make a connection to a sewer pipe, you have to have a way to keep the sewer gasses from entering a living area. The p-trap is an effective way of accomplishing this. It traps water that seals off the pipe.

Traps prevent sewer gas from entering the house. Period. They have no affect on gurgling or anything else these dumb answerers said. How can a trap prevent stagnant water???

Yup - the water that stays in the curve will prevent the gasses from coming in.
