There are 37 more stars in the sky than are there grains of sand on the earth. Some people think it's 36, but there are 37.

there are more stars bcoz sand on earth is more limited than the stars in the sky.. but the logic is that you said that stars in the sky and sands on the earth.. there is a possiblity that stars that a person can see in the sky is lesser than what grains of sand can be seen on the earth..

Carl Sagan made the comparison based on there being 100-200 billion stars in a typical galaxy and about the same number of galaxies.

200 billion x 200 billion is somewhere in the region of all the grains of sand on all the beaches in the world.

I don't think he included the deserts. But next time you are on a sandy beach, pick some sand up in your hand and let it filter through your fingers. then look along the beach and consider all the grains of sand. Then consider all the beaches....

It's a sobering thought.

According to Carl Sagan, yes about ten times as many stars as grains of sand on all the world's beaches. (He avoided counting the Sahara desert in the equation.)

Best current guestimate (by Australian astronomers) of the number of stars in the observable universe is 70 sextillion, 7 x 10^22,

I think Sagan was trying to help people visualise the size of the universe rather than do a statistical comparison, grain by grain, star by star.

good question... it seems to me that stars in the sky is more infinite than grains of sand. however, couldn't every grain of sand be accidently broken in half while handling it for the reason of counting? how many times will these grains be broken? i give up..... my best answer = what difference does it make?

Why bother with something as small as stars...There are more Galaxies than grains of sand on Earth...and that's just the ones in our known observations...!!!

There is no possible way to determine that answer. nobody can find out how much sand as far as grain count there is on the earth and same goes with the universe. we dont know for certain how big the universe is even with todays pysics theories.

There have to be more stars. Even though erosion and weathering may cause more sand to form, there is a decently finite amount of sand on our small planet.

The universe is huge and all-encompassing. There are so many stars out there.

But why waste your time counting either?
