Still getting answers. A few good, a few molesters. 'National' is being interpreted as forced by authority, by some.

ssbn598 - just the sort of good answer I wanted. I've met a few people like that and wish I still knew them.

Yes, I think there should be a National No Television Day, great idea. I think maybe more people would apprecite their families and spend more time with friends. I think that we could teach ourselves something new by time away from the box, do things we don't usually do as a majority - walk, read more...etc.

I think that those people with children would benefit from this as their learning and development would increase, and also adults that have literacy problems - I think TV takes children away from their learning and education - they spend more hours in front of the box than doing any other activity. I think kids need more attention from parents. I know parents who just put their kids infront of the tv because they want them to be quiet or they don't have time for them.

Personally I think TV is ok in small doses, but overall its crap, you pay so much for Sky/Cable/Satellite services but its all a bunch of repeats, no thanks waste of money, so I am definately NOT TV person, more an internet/reading/talking person, so I say bring it on!!

Why?
What Would That Achieve?
You Could Try It And Call It Imaginative Day.
Instead Of Watching The Television They Have To Make Something Up,
Game To Play etc.
I Think If They Were To Enforce It They May Be Lynched lol

On TV last night about the history of TV they mentioned that there used to be an hour a night when TV shut down to allow parents to put the children to bed. Good idea.

And can you remember the 3 day week under the Tories in the 70s when TV shut down at about 10.30 ? Silly idea.

The thing is you should be able to exercise enough control over your own life to enable other communication. Nothing inherently wrong with TV. Or chips. Or politicians. Just not all the time eh?

Sure, why not? Too many kids out there don't know what it is to read a book or bicycle or go camping. Instead, they "camp out" in front of a television. All of these kids will lack imagination because they were never taught how to imagine. It is all being shoved in their face on the TV. So let's shut the darned things off. Heck, instead of one day, let's make it a week (or more).

Interesting idea. One of the smartest women I knew in HS had no TV at home. They were well-off and could have afforded many, but her parents made a conscious decision to not have a TV. I once asked her what she did at night and she said she talked to her parents, read a lot of books and studied. She ended up being the school Valedictorian.

Heck no. You're a crazy person. I work all day and I use to TV to relax. I don't have kids or a significant other so TV isn't taking away from anything. I make time each night to read a couple of chapters out of what ever book I'm reading at the moment.

If all the good programmes were put on the same day. and the repeats stopped repeating themselves a National day would be unnecessary. There would only be about a week of viewing each month.

that would be neat. it would be interesting to see how much television revolves around daily life. you don't often realize how much something is affecting you until it's gone.

maybe i'm not being fair because i don't have cable and i don't really watch television (i keep myself current by reading up on the shows and stuff going on through the telly). . . but the reactions and results would be fascinating indeed.

Can't you decide to do this on your own? Personally the end of May until the beginning of new fall shows is No Television Season.
