Your menstrual cycle is based on hormones. They are follicle stimulating hormone (FHS), lutenizing hormone (LH), estrogen and progesterone.

FSH works to stimulate follicle (egg) growth in the ovaries. Estrogen is also present and when estrogen reaches the right amount it causes a surge in LH, and the egg ruptures from the ovary. The follicle the egg was in remains on the ovary and starts to produce progesterone. Progesterone helps the uterine lining to grow, and if the egg is not fertilized progesterone helps your period start.

It's like Mother Nature, and she knows everything. I guess it's a cylce that your body goes through, it knows when and it also knows when to scare the mess out of you and skip a week.
