besides the point. It occured to me that white people not having melanin is tantamount to a plant not having chlorophyl. Am I wrong?
Do some research melanin does some important work for the body and they are missing it. What does that mean for them?

That's an insightful observation! It means we are pasty-pale and maybe more prone to skin cancer....
Edit: The rest of you crackers need to calm the f*ck down, it's only a question, and it's nowhere near some of the racist sh!t I see on here daily....

OK seriously, I would need to know what benefits a human derives from melanin in order to answer the question, but once I knew the benefits, the answer would be evident on its own, right? "some important work" isn't really enough to go on. Do you have a link or something because now I'm curious.

Eh? Melanin STOPS you from creating Vitamin D, in other words, it is the opposite to what you are saying.
It goes like this:
More melanin:
Darker skin
Less sunburn
Harder to get enough vitamin D.
Less melanin:
Paler skin
More sunburn
Easier to get enough vitamin D.
In other words, the sunnier the place where you live, the darker you want your skin.
Neither skin is better than the other.

Fortunately, I am Italian and have quite a bit of melanin. You are correct in that it prevents cancer and other skin related diseases. It also slows the aging process through the secretion of oils. But that's just my opinion.

I guess it doesn't affect life span considering that the oldest people I know are white.
Isn't chlorophyl part of how a plant breathes anyway? We have lungs.

not quite sure what it does but hopefully i will be OK. it's hard to get a color when you grow up in a cold place like Ireland.
