Ian Huntley has attempted to take a drugs overdose to spare him the anguish of living with the consequences of his actions. Is this to easy for a person who scrapes a pathetic excistence to be taken seriously...?

No they should not. They have a duty of care to ther prisoners that separates them from the animals they have to care for. Death is too good for creeps like Huntley. I want him to suffer mentally for what he did. Let his guilty conscience drive him insane. Compared to that, death becomes an easy option he shouldn't be allowed.

I'm not saying they should be encouraged but we shouldn't go out of our way to stop them. Particularly as 'life' isn't anywhere near life, if that's the only way to make sure that some of these people are never on the streets again then couldn't we just turn a blind eye? I don't care if people like Huntley spend years rotting in prison or not, however much he suffers it will never bring back his victims. Let them get on with it I say!

What a fantastic question. It does seem that when we are outraged by particular crimes, we feel a need to punish rather than to educate or help the person to change.

In my ideal world, criminals of this nature would be led through processes which would bring them face to face with what they'd done. They'd also be encouraged to go back in time to find out where the urges to commit the crime may have come from. We are missing so many opportunites to learn about these people. To harness their energies as a resource for good. They may be excellent teachers on how to safeguard us against them for instance.

But to answer your question..should we allow them to take their own lives? No. However, in truth, most prisoners, if they really wanted to committ suicide, could find a way sooner or later.

i dont think the prison service is allowing them to take their own lives but the prison service itself admits that they are unable to always stop an individual who is determined to do it. i dont think such suicide attempts mean that the prisoner should or not be taken seriously. the prison service has a duty of care to the prisoners but it does not have a duty to make the prisoners enjoy their time there. after all, the prisoners are all there for a reason. that does not mean that we should not be inhumane to them while they are there (that would be stooping to their level) but these sort of attempts will probably mean that individual will get some special treatment in there perhaps (e.g. suicide watches etc)

this is difficult, they should not be allowed to kill themselves because they should have to face what they have done everyday. but then again, they must be sick individuals to have done what they did in the first place, and they probably think about what they did in ore n feel happy about it. also if they were ever released, as some paedophiles n child killers are, the same tendencies will probably re-emerge and they will commit the same offence, only to cause more anguish.

therefore killing themselves will stop that anguish in the future, and also clear up space in the prisons.

No as it is a cowards way out like scumbags Ian Huntley, they deserve other priosoners to beat the crap out of them, only then should they get knifed or smething then fine, as they don't like child killers in there, they have it too easy in there, I think now the goverment you stick them in the army as prison's are getting too overcrowded!

They should not under any circumstances be allowed to take their own lives.

They should be slung in a padded cell with no human contact and allowed to starve to death laying in their own excrement.

Why let them have the satisfaction of knowing that they had that bit of control at their end.

They are scum and should be treated as such
Any human rights they may have enjoyed whilst being a part of society should be taken away completely.

i guess if your talking seriously then no, would that not make us as bad as them, they took a life and we allow another to follow. prisons definately need to be more regimented, harder, and perhaps inmates should be made to complete courses, be educated and taught right from wrong as well as receive therapy and behaviour modification. after all no mental stimulation or direction in life is what has put them there in the first place

We might give Huntley a length of piano wire.

If he wants to kill himself then I think they should just let him. As it is he is a drain on our finances. What I do not understand is how he could have ammassed so many Antidepressants. Surely he is in there for punishment so if he is depressed then tough. Who is prescribing Antidepressents for the parents of his victims?
