It's difficult to figure out what you mean. They are both fractions, in that sense they might be said to be the same. Cross-multiplying to convert both fractions to sixths makes both denominators the same. Prior to conversion, both numerators are "1" and so are "the same". Subtracting 1/6 from 1/2 makes it equal to (the same as) 1/3.
