When your mouth is slightly open, it relaxes muscles near your eyes, meaning you blink less. This makes it much easier to apply eye makeup, be it mascara or eyeliner.

I put on mascara all the time with my mouth closed. It 's not that hard!

Interesting observation. I think that their mouths are open because the hand may be covering the nose a little and this makes for difficulty breathing. The mouth is open to help us breathe.

Anyway back to your question.......Firstly i do because when you open your mouth it stops you blinking....and secondly...this is the all important one....Its merely a natural expression of astonishment when your man standing behind you exclaims to you how beautiful you look without it.....
a woman opens her mouth while applying mascara for the same reason a man opens his mouth while shaving. it tightens the skin on the face.

It's something that we can't help, it just happens naturally. It's like when we open our eyes really wide, our mouths open up with it, not intentionally. You should go infront of a mirror, stick your head out as close as you can in the mirror like you want to check to see what's in your eye, see if your mouth opens up.

because it steadies the eye lid so that it doesn't flutter - by opening the jaw, it stretches the muscle that leads to the eye you're also holding open.... this way you don't end up with mascara all over your eye lid! it also makes sure you don't breath through your nose and accidentally inhale something that makes you sneeze and thus get mascara ALL over!

LOL! You are very observant! We do seem to open our mouths when we apply makeup! Consentration, I guess. We can do it with our mouths closed.

They can, but opening your mouth keeps you from blinking.
Try putting something within two millimeters of your eye-lots of blinking, right? Now open your mouth.
Less blinking.
