I don't believe there is a correlation between "smartness" however that is measured, and poor natural vision
sometimes there is a small correlation between young people who care more about how they look (more likely not to wear glasses whether they need them or not, especially since the advent of contact lenses) and young people who care more about their studies and just wear glasses if they need them
I suspect this has lead to the stereotype of the smart bookworm with glasses

No. They could have eye problems just caused by falling down drunk on the floor of their trailer. Eye glasses are there to correct your vision not because you were smart enough to be able to read. That idea went out with the advent of free public education.
