My 88 Mercury Cougar is leaking radiator fluid not from the radiator or hose itself but from under the bottom of the motor and it only does it when the car is stopped. Help! Never seen a leak like this!

I just wanted to confirm what everyone else is saying. The only place a leak could occur when the engine is off, but not when it's on is the water pump seal.

Many seals have ribs in the rubber that act like the threads on a screw. They actually "pull" the liquid away from leaking when the motor is running, but when you shut the engine off, the rubber is too hard from age to keep the water in.

So, they're all correct, except the lovely young lady whose guess wasn't at all bad, but it is most likely incorrect.

Cars don't leak radiator fluid. Cooling systems leak distilled water and antifreeze. If you have trouble finding the exact cause if the leak, you need to have an inexpensive *cooling system pressure test done to find the source of the leak. Don't be surprised if the water-pump "weep hole" is leaking coolant when it's under pressure.

If you're sure it's not condensation from the ac, then you may have a cracked block.. Take it to a mechanic or take a look under the engine yourself. Good luck, sounds like a bad thing!!!!

sounds like your water pump , the seal in it fails and leaks when you switch engine off. only a matter of time before it goes completly.

yes, definately the water pump the water pump has a little hole in it so that when the packing (rubber that keeps the shaft from leaking) wears out it will leak from the hole.

The likely culpret, (excluding the hoses) would be your water pump.
