I was interviewing a couple of CPAs. One of them decided to do some work I did not request and billed me for it. Now I received an invoice from him demanding me to pay him.

What can do I do?

He's also threatening me to file this with small claims court.

I had a CPA do some work for me. The work was good, but they also overbilled. For some reason professional people think this is OK--I wouldn't pay it if you didn't ask for the work to be done.

This sounds very unreasonable on the part of the CPA. Unless you expressly asked him to do the work you are not liable. Did he say: "I'll do X and get back with you; and you said sure do it? There may have been misscommunication. If it is worth your while, you could go to small claims courts and defend yourself. I do not think he will take you if the amount is small.
Morally speaking, did you benefit from his work? Have you use the information he provided you? If yes, I think you should pay him for his time. It does not mean you have too.

Dont pay and go to court. You do not have to go to small claims court. You can not have an attorney in small claims. You can elect to go to civil court , and the loser pays both lawyers. If he knows he is at fault , he would not want to pay for your lawyer.

If he turns you over to a collection agency , you need to respond that it is not a vaild bill to keep it off your credit report. If you do not the it will automatically be put on it.

If you did not have a contract for the work then small claims court would not do him any good. he would have to have proof you contracted him to do the work. Now if you signed any agreement than you need to pay up. Good Luck.

If you fill injust contact company and talk to a rep. to see if it can be clered up. Or contact an attorney. Could end up on your credit report.
