so what if God offends you. You don't have to worship him. Nor do you have to say the pledge. We say it out of respect for what the flag stands for. Freedom of religion, to worship an unknown invisible vapor , an alligator, fence-post or even true and living God. Or, even to choose NOT to worship. The flag represents the freedom you seem to carelessly think as nothing important. At least leave out the God part, and try to uphold the freedom..or move to Iraq.

When I was a kid, we didn't say the words"under God" in the pledge. I don't remember when it was put there. We should be saying "under ANY God or NO GOD" just to shut people up. There are so many other things going on in our country to yell about as far as I'm concerned. And a lot more things to spend our tax dollars on than fighting over a few words that really don't matter anyway. I sincerely hope that you are as offended by the state of this nation. You damn well should be. Maybe you're the one who is IGNORANT.

You cannot be required to say the pledge of allegiance. With or without the "under God" part.
That would be compelled speech and is prohibited, both by the 1st Amendment and under the constitutional ban against loyalty oaths.

I stopped saying The pledge in 9th grade. As coragryph points out, you don't HAVE to say it.
(But you have to stand while the rest do. I was busted once, because I kept reading the book I was involved in -- I THOUGHT I was being subtle, but the teacher noticed. Even though I was standing, I was looking down at the open book on my desk.)
Why is it said? It's a mis-guided attempt to instill patriotism in defenseless children. I find it morally reprehensible to "require" small children to make a promise they aren't capable of understanding.
Gee, I just love how all these "patriotic Americans" who answered are telling you that if your beliefs aren't identical to theirs, you should, for example, "move to North Korea" -- so few Americans get the concept.

The reason you are offended because God is in the pledge of allegiance is because you have doubts about your belief.
That is my answer from Washington, D.C.

The simple truth is that YOU don't. If you don't like the fact that this country is based on a religion, move to North Korea, where you can have all the religious oppression you want. And because you say that we are ignorant fools for believing in God, shows that you hate freedom of religion. The fact that you think in God we trust should be taken out of the pledge of allegiance shows you hate freedom of speech too.

To thank God for allowing us to live in a country, which is like heaven on earth with plenty of food, water and honey(money) for all.
You pledge allegiance to the republic which with God's blessings provides you all this.
You must have a very miserable existence constantly looking over your shoulder to make sure nobody is going to hit you, Such a state comes from not believing in the creator of all beings. So before you fall down start believing.

Why does the sun come up in the East?
I mean, I'm an atheist, too, and so I don't worship the Sun God. I want the sun to come up in the West at least some of the time. Who's responsible for this problem?
