Marriage is a legal binding contract between a man a woman, although attempts are being made to change that definition. To me, a marriage is a legal binding contract between a man and a woman, filed at the courthouse after a ceremony (be it church or courthouse or beach etc) which shows an outward display of the commitment between the two.

A spoken agreement between two people which is then confirmed by signing a register. In most countries this is only between a man and a woman, but in the better countries such as Canada, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands it can also be between persons of the same sex.
