a is just a variable, like x or y. It's just a fill in for a for a number. the equation would be a= -578 because you subtract 578 from each side, canceling out on the left and becoming a negative on the right.

If that's not the entire problem, they probably want you to use substitution.

The first letters of the alphabet, a,b,c, are usually considered as coefficients or constants. In your case 578 + A = not enough information to make a determination. If it was 578 + A = 0, then subtract 578 from both sides and A = -578.

A is a variable. That means it can be any number. Think of it as a question mark. 578+?=what? There should be some way in your math book to figure out what a equals. If you go back and check, it might even tell you. Look for something that says a=273, or whatever.

The math problem is incomplete. You need to go and speak to the teacher. See, problem is they probably have a ballet teacher teaching math and your poor kid is confused because the teacher is confused. As the question stands, 578 + a can equal to a lot of things depending on the value of a. BTW: It is spelled explanatory, not explainatory.
