I would educate whichever child is less driven. My reasoning would be that a driven person will find their own opportunity where it lies. A less driven person needs more help to get along in the world.

In A Tree Grows in Brooklyn the mother chose to keep the son in school rather than the daughter. The daughter was a bookworm and was devastated at the prospect of having to drop out. The son was a borderline ne'er-do-well. The mother figured the girl would somehow find a way to get an education but the boy would be in no end of trouble if she didn't make him finish school. That choice worked out partly because there actually were educational opportunities available for the daughter. If the story had taken place in an isolated village where the nearest school was hundreds of miles away and the chosen child would be the only one to receive an education I think the most motivated child would be the better choice.

Being Completely Practical:

If one is male and the other female, I would educate the male. Uneducated males are much more dangerous to society than uneducated females.

If both are males, I would choose to educate the one which shows the greatest aptitude for it. I'd send the other to the Marine Corps where he could be educated by someone who would teach him discipline.

If both were female... educate the one least likely to be suited to married life.
