i have a friend who lives in a very small town who is having a skunk problem. At night it was getting up on her deck and eating all her cats food. She now takes the food in at night hoping that would discourage the skunk but all that did was seem to make the skunk mad and she thinks it is attacking her cats now. She can't shoot it cause they are in town, she can't poison it cause the cats might get into the poison and because it is such a small town there is no animal control there. Is there a way to get rid of skunks that won't hurt her other pets? She is getting desperate. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Not sure if this is the right category but couldn't find any that this question really fit into.

It says actually trapping these animals, or finding a trapper in your hometown.Try spraying a mixture of eight ounces of dish detergent, eight ounces of castor oil, and one gallon of water around the area where the skunks reside. To determine if the den has been vacated, stuff newspaper in the entry hole; if animals are still present, the paper will be pushed out within 24 hours.

The only way to keep skunks permanently out from under a building is to seal the structure off with chicken wire or hardware cloth. It's important to sink the wire down a few inches into the ground, bend it at a 45° angle, and then run at least 12 inches of wire out away from the building in a reverse "L" shape, so a false bottom is created—foiling any skunk who tries to dig back in. A note of caution: Be sure that all animals are out from under a structure before sealing it off; otherwise, the remaining skunks will starve to death.
Preventative measures such as covering garbage cans and not leaving pet food out will help discourage their presence. Also, covering openings under patios, porches, and crawl spaces will prevent occupancy. Always make sure no animal is denning there first.

Your friend needs to check into live animal traps, it sounds like. Any feed supply store should have these. It'll be a big wire cage that has a trip door. We've used these on oppossums, racoons, and various other nuisance animals to catch them initially. Have her put a tin of catfood in the back, and you should have a skunk by morning. The problem this presents is the possiblity of being sprayed. I would say you could try using plastic bags or raincoats to wrap the caged animal in so the scented juice doesn't get onto you, but it'll stink to high heaven. Feed stores will often sell tranquilizers, too, that can be used on your pets, so you might put a little of that in the food (it is often applied based on weight, and you can guestimate the weight of the skunk) and see if you can keep it passed out. That's as creative as I can get on this for you with the conditions you lined out. She can either take it out to the country backroads and release it, or shoot it out in the country somewhere. Good luck.

Does she have electricity outlets on the outside of her home? Skunks are rodents and they have a higher frequency of hearing than cats, dogs and humans. She can go to a big box hardware store like Loews or Home Depot and get an electronic device that emits a sound unhearable to cats, dogs and humans and unbearable to rodents. Depending on the brand the box can claim that the sound will cover up to 2000 square feet but don't count on those claims. Get a few of them to cover the parameter of the yard with the assumption that walls and other obstacles will dull the sound.

You could get a "Humane" Animal Trap which will hold it till the next Morning, and then You could possibly have someone from animal control come and pick it up for You. It's Safe, and it won't hurt the Skunk. BTW, I Really Dig Your Avatar.

First, we have animal control, we used a small anamal trap to catch them. when they came after them , they would approch the cage slowly to give them a shot. Since you don't have A.C. ,if you went to the trap slowly and took it to the woods, you could PROBABLY get away without getting sprayed.GOOD LUCK, hope this helps
