Yes. Pick the system that you want. Make sure it has at least 512k of ram. Get the largest hard drive that comes standard with it. If you have the option, try to get a 128+ video card. Most come with a burner standard now. NO FLOPPY DRIVE!!!!!! Not worth what they charge. Look for an LCD monitor, 17+ inches. Anything you need after that, you can add later. You can find better deals in their outlet. I have Purchased three systems from there. Watch out for the shipping. they charge $99 for this. You can usually get free shipping with the right promotion.

You are making this too hard. You want a basic computer with at least 512MB memory. (get 1GB if you can afford it) Same with the hard drive. It will come with 80 gig drive...get a larger one if you can afford it. The Dell Dimensions come with Windows XP Home version operating system, so make no changes there. The other options have to do with the type of drive. The single drive will work just fine. I would spend the extra money to get the 17" flat panel monitor since it will take up a lot less space and use a lot less electricity. The only other thing to think about is if you want any productivity software to do word processing or spreadsheets. If so, add that. Otherwise the standard computer will work right out the box for internet and e-mail.
A better solution might be the Apple Macintosh. They cost just a little more, but come with a lot better software for photos, music, internet, and email. The biggest deal is that they are a lot easier to use and will be a lot more trouble-free.

No, you don't HAVE to customize; they just start with the basics. Everything from there is "added value or functionality." The only question I see here is what might need to buy to go online, depending on what kind of connection you have. Whether you have a phone line or cable will make a difference. The easy way out is to talk to their 800 number.
If you get a guy in Bangalore, though, you might as well hang up and by a computer AT A STORE. The kid in Sam's Club will guide you better and the computer is right there in front of your nose. There is no question of customizing it. AND they'll take it back in 15 days, maybe even 30, no questions asked, if your kid doesn't like it. Their price will be about the same as Dell's.
Don't to to Comp USA. They have no respect for their customers.

You don't have to customize it at all. The hardest thing your computer will do out of your list above believe it or not is play the kids games. If they are little kids, then I wouldn't worry about this too much. If they are teenagers and they want to play high end games (and you are willling to pay for this) Then you are going to need a better computer.
For little kids:
CPU - doesn't matter
RAM - 512 MB
Hard Disk - doesn't matter
Video Card - doesn't matter
Monitor - doesn't matter
For teenagers:
CPU - Intel Core Duo or AMD equivalent
RAM - 1 GB
Hard Disk - 160 GB (SATA) or larger
Video Card - 256 MB or higher NVidia or ATI
Monitor - 8 ms response time or faster
Might pay to think about upgraded warranty if you are going up market. email me if you want to talk about this more

Make sure the model you pick has what you need. You need something with a modem or Intel Centrino for wireless internet capability. Once you do that and get your unit, you can subscribe to an ISP like SBC yahoo, or AOL then you can check e-mail and chat. You need something with decent memory like maybe 512 ram so it would be easy to download games and music. Everythting else is already in there. Just continue without customization, it will be fine.
Breathe. Exhale. Good luck.

You do not have to customize, the only thing I would say is if you wish to play DVD's, make sure you have a DVD player and go for a little extra hard drive space and at least 512 RAM.

I would not get another Dell computor. Not to say anything bad about the computor itself but if you want tech support GOOD LUCK! You end up calling India and speaking to someone that barely understands english and cannot assist with any issues. They tell your to press f12 (whatever good that does) and to unplug everything and then plug it back in. Not to mention that it takes an hour to get an agent on the phone they then will put you on hold for 45 mins to come back and tell you to uplug everything and while you are doing so they hang up on you. Worthless!!!!

You don't need to customize. When you do it is upgrade to all the parts that you can upgrade. You can leave it at the base model. My only concern would be ram and the video card for your games. Otherwise. I think the base system should be fine. Write me if you have any other questions.

Please get informed about that PC's Operating System. If LINUX or SYMBIAN or any open source type OS, that can be customized. But expert required for that customization. I'm not sure, but in this case may be they have developed some easy tools to customized.
In case OS is Windows based, have minimum part to customized.

if your difficult is lifeless it is to not difficult to repair. If the pc doesnt activate then you certainly offered a reasonable project. this is a skill difficulty. the skill grant for laptops are outfitted on a circuit thats integrated into the board. to repair that new motherboard.....yet its not affordable. maximum suitable element is sustain and get a sparkling one or dish out the money and get a sparkling board put in via Dell. the project with Dell hardware factors is that its not elementary to locate. I each and every each and every now and then can. Does lights fixtures even come on or is it not something? added A refurbished 8500 motherboard base with guarantee is approximately $275 greenbacks. Its a 15day guarantee and could desire to be shown that it grew to become into put in professionally via a tech if some thing grew to become into to pass incorrect with it. Motherboard on my own is around $199. seek for Inspiron 8500 motherboard on ebay. sturdy success added nicely if its have been given not life then its surely the motherboard. Will that resolve the project.....it may. in case you pass by way of Dell then they could have the skill to attempt it for issues and consistent with danger supply you a guaranty on it. in case you pass by way of a tech and that they order the factors and have no guarantee than you're taking a great gamble. (i propose human beings to handle manufacture for laptops). If it grew to become into me i might pass forward take the prospect and get a sparkling board put in via DELL if it suits your funds.
