Try www.safety.live.com This is a windows free website that does a completly free scan and repair of your system at your request. first it does a scan and then asks what you want to repair.
Be warned it may take some hours as i had to leave mine run overnight from 12pm to 10 am next morning but it done the trick and saved me spending up to 100 euros for systems doctor software. good luck.

Without seeing the computer is hard to say.

Microsft maintains an outstanding site. It is almost the only one you'll ever need if you learn your way around it. It is hug but has a good search tool.

Check out this link and see if it helps.

the search was on "troubleshoot system restore"

You may be able to clear up the problem by running a virus scan and a spyware scan. Use 1 anti virus product and 2 different spyware cleaners. McAfee, AdAware, Defender are good.

I recommend turning off your computer, let it sit for 10 min, unhook all the plugs, rehook them, then turn it back on.
Try restoring again. If it still doesnt work - Save all your files that you want onto a disk or USB drive. Then put in the CD your computer came with (Recovery CD or Windows CD) and reinstall your whole system - will work then however - you will lose files if you dont save them to an outside source.

Sorry, I might not be very helpful here, but that happened to me a few days after buying my new PC. It wouldn't restore. So I ended up reformatting and reinstalling it to my own spec! Has worked a treat ever since, and I'm always in control of the system now.

Not much help but I can sympathise....

it sounds as though you did not create a restore point (date) when you first installed microsoft or if the software was pre-installed no date was created, i would suggest you go back to sysrestore and create a restore point or go online and ask one of the online pc doctors
