The longest word ever to appear in a non-technical dictionary of English is..
pneumonoultramicroscopic-
silicovolcanoconiosis
it's a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica or quartz dust ;-)
The real longest official word if you include (chemical names) is 1,913 letters. The term for the formula C(1289)H(2051)N(343)O(375)S(8). It'd be pretty hard to spell correctly...

W-H-A-T. What's so hard about spelling what? You say "what" is the hardest word to spell in the english language, but I don't think it's too bad and I think a lot of people would agree with me...

With 45 characters:
pneumono-
ultra-
microscopic-
silico-
volcano-
koniosis
*i had to cut them into parts as the site would not display it in a whole line! It is supposed to be spelled in one line.
which means a lung disease caused by breathing in particles of siliceous volcanic dust.
It is so long that I bet even users of yahoo answers wouldn't fit the whole word in one line inside this frame.
Everett Smith, the President of The National Puzzlers' League, in 1935 purely for the purpose of inventing a new "longest word".

This depends. When I was a kid I found the words necessary and sausage difficult to spell. A friend of mine found the word elephant difficult to spell. I reckon we should start a poll of all children and see which words come top.
