Write what you know. No matter the genre you use - use it in a way that it involves your life experiences. Events from your childhood, teen years, adulthood. Use the towns and neighborhoods that you know well and love.
If you ever read Stephen King you notice that a lot of his books are located in the same part of the country - Maine. A place called Castle Rock is a fictional town that he has used in many of his novels. More than likely this town Castle Rock was based off of Stephen Kings hometown Durham, Maine and Lisbon Falls, Maine.
Stephen King also has used a fictional town called Derry, Maine. Derry is supposed to be near Bangor, Maine. Stephen King has stated that Derry is really his portrayal of Bangor, Maine.
These cities are based on what Stephen King knows from his life experiences.
Also concerning Stephen King you will notice that several of his stories involve a group of boys that are friends (sometimes there is a girl in the group). Example: In his story The Body (that later became the movie Stand By Me) there are a four boys that are friends. The boy named Gordon is the one telling the story - as a grown up reflecting on an event from his childhood. There are many parallels between Gordon and Stephen Kings actual life in this book.
What do I think you should write about?
My suggestion would be to take an event from your life and use your imagination - and write a story about it. Use the places you know and love.

Tell me more. If you have no ideas, why do you want to write a story? Is it an assignment (probably not, you'd have a topic)? Do you want to be a writer? I need to know more. Because it's usually the other way round, you have an idea for a story but don't know how or where to start.
You said, "anything will do." If you write about just anything, your story will most likely not work. You may not even be able to finish it. You'll have no passion for the subject: no passion, no good writing.
But if you still want to pursue an idea, how about taking a clean sheet of paper and writing the following sentence on it, line after line, until something presents itself.
I don't know what to write about.
Keep writing it; something will "hit" you--almost guaranteed.
Good luck!

Go ahead and write the story, the ideas will follow :).
Let's get serious for a while. What stories as a child you liked best? What movies you seek to see? What is your dream in life? Search within your answers and I am sure that you'll find your story hidden among them.

Try writing a story about a guy who asks a similar question and posts it on a bulletin board in,say,a public library. He gets several good answers and one that is so dark and disturbing that, although he is shaken deeply,he is nontheless intrigued and sets out to find the author of the idea. What he finds is up to you. Post your story if you use this idea.

Most stories start with an idea. You're out of luck f.t.b. if you don't have any. Try going for a walk and letting your mind just be

Write about your experiences, about your loves, your disappointments, your dreams (you know, where you go at night) and your hopes. Then turn on the imagination.
