Chocolate contains a chemical called tetrahydro-beta-carboline, which blocks an enzyme called monoamine oxidase in the body. Monoamine oxidase is responsible for breaking down monoamine neurotransmitters, which are basically the body's naturally occurring feel-good drugs. Eating chocolate has the effect of increasing the availablity of these drugs, which makes you feel good.

Artifically produced monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are sometimes used to treat depression and anxiety.
