It's all based on statistics. Those who are in categories more likely to have accidents pay more. That's how insurance companies balance the risk-payout ratio.

No it is not unfair. Insurance, in order for it to work, needs to balance risk. Males, statistically, are more dangerous drivers than females, and it is because of their inherent maleness.
You may know some bad female drivers, but on the whole, more accidents are caused by testosterone-driven teenage males speeding and racing.
And the reason married people get discounts is because it has been proven that married people are more responsible drivers also. Maybe it is because marriage is a sign of responsibility, or maybe because marriage makes people act more responsibly, but whatever the reason, the insurance companies wouldn't do this unless they had hard figures to back it up. After all, it is their money at stake.

Sure, its unfair but so is so many things. Like the above posters said, it is because statistics tell them young males have more accidents, married people less, types of car, those know to be sportier, get in more accidents. Why do kids get discounts at movie theaters when they take up as much of a seat and make more mess and noise. Why do older people get discounts, the ones I know make so much more then me. Why does it rain on the one day you are planning an outdoor party. Life is unfair but, it all balances out.

It is very very unfair. I would want the insurance industry to have to provide current verifiable numbers in each state. It is my observation that girls drive much worse and by college age are in accidents at a rate of about 10 to one over guys. The college girls in my town are really really bad drivers and there are three schools so it is three times bad. Make insurance give you numbers for that situation that are not from 60 years ago when 50 guys drove for every one girl. It is time for some young guys to get a lawyer from the ACLU and SUE their azzes off.

If you really want to lower your rates, get older, get good grades, or get married. Its all based on which groups are statistically more likely to have accidents.
