DONT use Thompson's Water Seal. We used it on a deck made from rough sawn oak boards, treated it Spring and Fall with Thompson's and it still rotted out in 4 years.

I'm not sure that it is possible to stain/weather-proof a deck that has been painted. Unless you really hate the fact that it is painted, your easiest solution would be to hit it with a quick sanding and repaint it with an exterior and/or floor grade paint.

I have never been impressed by Thompson's Water Seal. It just doesn't hold up to our dry high altitude conditions and water would only bead up for about 2 months. I like boiled linseed oil. It is the drying agent used by artists in oil paintings. It is what linoleum flooring is made from so it is pretty sturdy stuff in it's dry state. I would mix it with turpentine so it doesn't go on too thick. I had one section of a redwood deck that ended up looking like a high gloss finish on a Chris Craft boat.

Thompson's water seal is great for sealing and waterproofing. It lasts a season, depending on the sunshine/water exposure.

Use the Thompsons, but if you have siding on your house be careful. It will cause discoloration.
