Who do you think is the greatest sportman ever. Doesn't matter which sport. The person that has achieved the most and taken the their sport to another level. I'm thinking of Sampras, Schumacher, Jack Nicklaus, Steve Redgrave, Michael Johnson, Michael Jordan. These are just to get things going. I am sure there are more. When putting a name forward try and give a short reason why.

Connors and McEnroe had a profound affect on tennis, and there is no question that Jordan affected the NBA.

But I'd have to say Nicklaus. It was often said that he won more majors than most golfers win tournaments. And he was a true sport about the game. I'll never forget hearing the story of him disqualifying himself in a tournament he was leading. He was on the second tee, and suddenly called an official over. He told the official that he had too many clubs in his bag. The official did a quick count, and said "You're legal. I count 14". Jack said he brought his son with him to the driving range the night before, and forgot. He took all clubs out of the bag and turned the bag over. Sure enough, a five iron on a cut down shaft fell out (his son was only 5 at the time). Jack apologized to the tournament directors and the PGA, and left the course. If I remember right, he had a 5 stroke lead at the time.
