Use a propane torch, but don't light it. Turn it to the on position and move it around the areas in which a vacuum leak could be, and when you get close to it the idle speed should increase. Do you know what a mass air flow meter is? It is in the big pipe between the air filter and the snorkel. Take a screwdriver and rap on it pretty hard, but not hard enough to damage the thing, but pretty solid. The engine should die right then and there. I suspect it to be the mass air flow sensor/meter causing the problem. I'm a master mechanic, and I have seen this problem before. I can't bet on it being the problem, but it sure has all the symptoms. One other thing I can think of is a plugged fuel filter, or air getting into the fuel line from a bad hose. Look for a vacuum leak, a cracked spark plug, or EGR valve not working properly. Good Luck!

You may have excessive build up of carbon on the piston heads...try a can of SeaFoam (available at most auto parts stores). Follow the instructions on the can for adding to a major vacuum line into the intake (the power brake booster hose works very well)...let sit for 15-30 minutes, the run the vehicle at idle. The carbon will turn to a fine powder and exit through the exhaust...it will smoke very badly for quite a while.
Best of luck!

My 1993 22RE had a horrible misfire after replacing the engine with a rebuilt engine, new cam, and new rockers. After two weeks of intermittent troubleshooting, I found a large ground wire disconnected at the intake plenum. Discovered after removing the injectors and testing them. Securing the ground wire cleared up all of the misfire.
It could be other problems such as improperly adjusted TPS, leaky fuel pressure regulator, or the mass flow sensor resistive sweeper making erratic contact. I have restored my mass flow sensor by lightly cleaning the resistive sweeper with alchohol and 1200 grit emory paper. The sweeper will clean up like new.

that motor has a fifth injector in the intake plenum that enriches cold start. thats why it runs better when cold. change the fuel filter, and do an intake butterfly, and plenum cleaning. then run a can of fuel cleaner through it. post more info next time. does it run bad at all rpms when warm or just at idle?

My 93 is doing it too, but I remember long ago I had a escort that did that too. Pull your truck in a dark place at night and open the hood. If you see sparks jumping it maybe from using armor all products near the grill or hot wax at a car wash.

pull all plugs check for any of them for fouled, burnt or mechanically damaged.take a compression test.also a leak down test of each cylinders, possibly the cyl.that is misfiring the valve seats is moving up and down in there.this kind of work is best done at a shop....other poss..mass air flow sensor, injectors, igniter(if equipped).

first order of business would be to check compression of the cylinders. perform both a "dry" and "wet" compression test. if you need me to elaborate, contact me
