Well it depends on his behavior. Is he depressed, suicidal, sleeps a lot, anxious, change in eating habits? These are all signs of mental distress and if you're a real friend you should help him seek help with a professional. Or you could simply walk away from the problem, like most republicans seem to do when there is a crisis.

How about you engage wiht him in adult conversation and explore each others views on political issues? My guess is that he'll probably be right on more counts than you.
