I just started school again and didn't have a very good first day back. I'm really shy, kind of lonerish (although I do have friends, I just don't talk a lot in the classroom) but I normally make out okay in school. But I have one class filled with people I can't stand. They're not like me at all and I just don't fit in. They all try to be cool and don't like people like me. During the whole class people were talking - and the teacher didn't even tell them to stop! He said he's fine with talking in the classroom. I don't know how I'll be able to work like this! Nobody shuts up. And there's not one person in the class who I can talk to - I don't know what I'm going to do when it comes time to do an activity in groups. They don't like me and I don't like them! I don't know what to do or how to handle this - maybe I just had a bad first day and things will get better, but if things continue being like they were today, I don't know how I'll be able to survive the year. Advice, anyone?

You're in a rough spot. As a teacher myself, I wish I had you as a student -- I appreciate someone who keeps his or her mind on the subject at hand, and it sounds like your own teacher doesn't much care whether anyone learns anything. Speaking from a broad perspective, the best advice is probably just to grit your teeth and get through it. However, that isn't very helpful in the here and now.

So here's my advice -- someone else in that class must be thinking what you're thinking, even if it doesn't look like it right now. (My experience as a teacher is that even in the most unruly classrooms, at least a third of the class resents the chaos, but keeps quiet about it.) So start reading body language, find that person, and make friends.

Another option is to try to become interested -- and act interested -- in the subject. Talk to the teacher about it, and ask if he knows anyone else in the class you might team up with. Let him play matchmaker. If he's paying any attention at all, he'll have an idea about who else is taking the class seriously.

If things don’t improve fast tell the principle “During the whole class people were talking - and the teacher didn't even tell them to stop! He said he's fine with talking in the classroom. I don't know how I'll be able to work like this!” Get your parents to help get you in another class.

Don't panic - it's only the first day, and things will probably settle down quite soon. It's always a bit strange on the first day back. You're sure to find someone you can work with in the class - the law of averages says so. There may even be someone who's feeling just like you tonight - look out for them tomorrow!

screw them, if they don't like you does it matter? who cares about what they think of you. just act like a civilized human being around them when you have to work with them. things will get better as the year goes on. at least you were not like a person that goes to my school and ran down the senior hall screaming i hate seniors. not a good idea. you will get through it trust me.

Its not that big of a deal. It sounds like you are in regular school. School does not even matter until you get to college.
