We have already been through the courts and lost due to incompetence on the part of our very expensive attorney, and a stubborn old judge. It is regarding my 11 year old stepson (boyfriend's son) who left to visit his mom and didn't come back. He was living with us for a few months prior, and going to school and doing well. Now we cannot even get a hold of him or her (spoken once in a month and a half) despite repeated calls and messages. It is a BAD environment with drugs, alcohol, lack of guidance and erratic school attendance. He was supposed to fly back to us after 2 weeks. We feel powerless...he is out of state and we cannot afford another attorney. It is really a matter of his health and welfare, he's only 11. If you have any ideas, thanks.

child protective services in the state the child is in. also cps in your state.

the bar association has referral services in most communities, they can refer you to a lawyer willing to work pro bono, but bear in mind that pro bono means they work for a large cut of any damages awarded. this is not that kind of case. obviously you need a lawyer who will work out a payment plan with you.

now the rough part. if the child is out of state, you may need a lawyer in that state as your local attorneys are probably not a member of the other state's bar association. it's a mess i know. good luck.

What state are you in? That might help people be able to answer you better. If you've already lost a recent custody case and she has physical custody and is out of state I would say it doesn't look good. also - pro bono and family law don't normally go together! family law is a huge moneymaker.

If you have legal custody then you need to contact social services. It may take a while considering that it is out of state and all.

If you have proof his welfare is at risk, call Human Services in the state where he is living and ask for a welfare check at ex wife's address.
