when I lived there, i saw mostly rattlers, copper heads, a very few coral snakes, some water snakes and quite a few of rat snakes. I enjoyed the rattle snake round up in Walnut Springs. especially the big cook off at the end. believe it or not, looks like and tastes a bit like chicken. it's probably politically incorrect to eat rattle snakes in this day and time.

speaking of eating, i was told, about 30 years ago, the body of a Kronkawa was found in a cave out side of Walnut Springs. Kronks were the only "active, not ritual" tribe of cannibals on the North American continent. I think the Spaniards and their Native American allies wiped the Kronks out in the 16th or 17th century
