It's a Christian thing, so you probably mean "God father", with a capital G. The role is to ensure the child is encouraged to follow Chrisianity. Promises are made as such at the service.

Godparents have an important role in Christian baptism. The parents undertake to bring up the child in the faith. The godparents support the parents and will take over responsibility if the parents die or leave the faith.
Those who have rejected Christianity still like to cling to the idea of godparents, but their function is unclear. It's just something you ask your friends to be,

The primary function of a Godfather is to assume custody of a child should his/her parents pass away. However it's also an informal "uncle" role... most times Godfather's are involved in the child's life and a role model.

if you are speaking of the roman Catholic faith then the Godparents are there as a suppose unit for the parents of the child and to reinforce the believes of the religion. To aid and support the parents with care and raising of the child. Also to act as Parent if the child where ot lose both of the birth parents.
Remember the role of Godparent is one of support and aid to the parents wishes NOT the role of a PARENT should the child dislike the rulings of the birth parents.
I had issues with my sister over this once I made her Godmother of my first son.Hence why I have not made her a godparent to any of my other children.

In the religious sense, the godparents promise to make sure that the child gets a proper religious upbringing. It is more ceremonial than not since I doubt that there is any legal standing for godparents.
