okay i still dont get this.
its a right triangle

1. the curved side is 2x
then the other sides are x and 5[square root] 3[end of square root]

this is a word problem.
2. a pole stands 12 yards high. a cable is attached to the ground five yeards from where the pole hits the ground and to the top of the pole. How long is the cable in feet?

i dont get this.

thanks.

word problem : draw a picture and label the sides
The pole is the A side and is 12 * 3 [ number of feet in a yard]= 36 'long
the part on the ground at right angles to the pole is the B side and is 5*3 = 15' long
using the Pythagorean Theorem solve for the C side which is called the hypotenuse
still here ?
[36*36]+ [15*15] = 1521 (1296+225)
to get the lenghthof C all we need to find out is the square root of 1521 which happens to be 39 '
to prove it multiply 39*39

1. Not sure what you are saying. You have a triangle with a "curved side"?

2. 12 squared + 5 squared = Answer squared

(12 * 12) + (5 * 5) = 169
SQRT of 169 = 13 So the cable is 13 feet long.

ok, answering the second.

the pole, the cable, and the distance along the ground form a right-angled traiangle, right? The cable is the hypotenuse (the "curved" side). Using P's theorem, Cable length = Square root of 12x12 + 5x5. That's square root of 169 = 13. So the cable length is 13 yards

a^2 + b^2=c^2

c being the hypotenuse
and a and b being the two shorter sides

a is how tall the pole is
b would be the distance

so
12^2 + 5^2 = c^2
144 + 25 = c^2
169=c^2
13=c

because 13*13=169

your answer is 13

Edit: I do not get what you are saying on the first one. A triangle with a curved side does not exist.

k the word problem is.

one side is twelve feet. the other side is 5 feet. so what is the hyponteneuse? you do 12 squared plus 5 squared.

I have no idea what you're talking about in the first one.
