It needs to be easy to use, so I can type in the name of the suburbs and it will tell me how many km's between the two places.

Use Google Maps. Just type in something like "San Diego to Los Angeles" and it will give you a map from the center of each city, along with driving directions and an approximation of the distance. However in doing this know that it may be a few miles off, due to the fact that it doesn't have an exact address so it is basing its calculations off of the center of the city. Hope this is what you were looking for!
