I love Sirius Balbck's answer. As a matter of fact I gave him a vote.
The idea that surrealism can be a theme is great and why don't you choose the best painting and recreate it changing the point of view the technique , the colour, etc.

I always liked Dali's painting The Broken Bridge and the Dream. Maybe you can choose one of his paintings that you especially like -- or one by another surreal artist -- and take your theme from something in that painting. Using that painting as an example, you could do lots of paintings that had bridges as their theme, incomplete ones and ones that led to strange and unexpected places and ones that and bridges made of flowers or cats or floating rocks...

Draw something impossible into possible, i guess your teacher is trying to push your creativity!
My art teachear taught me that nowadays nothing is creative anymore, but if we really want to create, lets use for example two or more created objects and combined them together (shape, function, colour, material, everything you name it) to make something new, this is call Metamorphoses if i am not wrong.
Taking the example of Dali's work, remember those soft or melting clocks? It used a created clock plus the function of an ice which is melting, get it?
Good Luck!

Can you not use Surreal art as your theme? Could you recreate one of Dali's works, say, "Time" but instead of floppy clocks, they could be floppy Cheeseburgers. Do something that relates to you, personally, if you like music, it could be your CD's hanging around, or your favorite animal.

Maybe try a surreal approach in the context of mandalas. Or anything else in a mandala. Google mandalas and see how cool they are.
