What do you mean by "adapt"? Absolutely you don't have to lose your ACCENT, that's ridiculous. BUT all people choosing to become a citizen of another country should of course adapt their lifestyle and speak the language. To feel otherwise would indicate that the person in question is only moving to the new country to use it for some reason other than integrating.

No way. I love French accents! You should be able to adapt to the point where you can independently function and live in this country. Other than that, cultural differences is what makes America so unique and interesting. And anyway, there isn't just one kind of culture in America that you could hypothetically adpat to.

No! I dont think you should try to lose the accent. And this has nothing to do with you because you can obviously understand english, but I hate that when people come over here, and most of you probably know who Im talking about, think that we have to learn spanish and this and that. If we went to their country there is no way in hell they would bend over backwards for us.

We are fortunate here in the U.S to have people from all different cultures from all across the world. I think deep down, most of us would prefer to embrace different backgrounds rather than try to force people to "assimilate."
I took 10 years of French in school, as well as some Spanish and Italian. It's great to meet someone with an accent, ask them where they're from (politely), and then speak to them in their native language. Even if I meet someone whose language I don't speak, it's great to hear where people are from, and why they came to the U.S.
Also, most people I know think accents are sexy! Please don't try to lose yours to fit in.

Yes, it would be nice if immigrants would learn English. If I moved to some foreign country that didn't have English for a primary language, I wouldn't expect people to bend over backward for me because I didn't know their language. I would be considered egotistical to expect everyone in that country to conform to my inability to speak that language, yet when people from other countries make no effort to learn English, I am still the one considered to be egotistical because I am annoyed.

No, but you should learn the language, & fit in that way.
I learned French when I visited France. The Europeans already know this.
It seems to be the Southern hemisphere inhabitants who refuse to learn English & have to have everything in their own language, & hate us for what they are enjoying...

it really depends on you. but we could not really deny the fact that rascism is still present (though subtle) so you may beforced to adapt to the way they speak or act...
it's fun, though, but try not to lose your individualism...let people get to know the real you...
